Why you should invest in wireless cameras for outdoor security?

by ChenJanice 12 Jun 2023 0 Comments

Whether you are monitoring your home, office, or any outdoor area wireless security cameras are a flexible and convenient solution that eliminates the need for complicated wiring installations. They allows you to easily place them in strategic locations without the limitations of cables.

Due to natural disasters, cables(harness) of wired cameras are more likely to be damaged (degraded) resulting in unreliable security networks. Hence a wireless camera is more suitable for outdoor security due to minimum wiring requirement.
Below we’ll discuss all the benefits of investing in wireless outdoor cameras but first have a look on how they works.

How wireless security cameras works?

How wireless security cameras works?

Wireless security cameras are equipped with sensors, lenses, and microphones to capture video and audio just like regular cameras. However, instead of using Ethernet for data transmission, they rely on wireless communication i.e. WiFi, cellular data or Bluetooth .
The captured video and audio signals are converted into a digital format, reducing the file size and optimizing transmission efficiency through the process known as encoding and compression. Wireless security cameras prioritize data security by supporting encryption protocols, such as WPA2.
After compressing size the wireless camera connects to a local Wi-Fi network, using its built-in Wi-Fi adapter.

Then the cameras send video signals to a designated receiver or storage systems connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

  • Many wireless security camera systems come with an NVR. The NVR acts as a central hub for receiving and storing video footage from multiple cameras.
  • Wireless cameras offer the option to send video signals directly to cloud storage services.
  • Some wireless cameras also allow direct streaming of video signals to a computer or laptop.

Wireless cameras can be powered with AC or DC power supply. DC wireless cameras (battery powered) offer flexible placement. While AC powered wireless cameras gives a continuous operation eliminating the need of recharging

Benefits of wireless outdoor security cameras:

Less wires usage & ease of installation:
Unlike traditional wired cameras, wireless outdoor security cameras are free of excessive wiring that allows it to be installed anywhere in the range of network(Wifi).
It eliminates the problems of managing wiring harnesses & keeps you from drilling holes in walls. Simply find a suitable location, mount the camera, connect it to your Wi-Fi network, and that’s all.

Flexible Placement:
Wireless cameras provide the flexibility to position them wherever you need surveillance without being limited by cable length. Also, you can easily relocate them according to your needs.

Advanced Features:
Wireless outdoor cameras come with a range of advanced features such as motion tracking, full-color night vision, two-way audio, facial recognition free cloud storage & backup batteries. Such features provide added convenience in monitoring and protecting your property.
Despite WIFI, some wireless cameras can also operate on cellular data and Bluetooth network.
Different models of wireless cameras can receive signals upto 10 miles.

Remote Access:
In opposite to traditional analog cameras that do not have built-in remote access functionality, wireless security cameras allows you to view live footages & recordings remotely.
Using dedicated apps on your smartphone, tablet or PC, you can monitor your property from anywhere with an internet connection, providing peace of mind.

Wireless camera systems often support multiple camera connections. This means you can easily expand your surveillance coverage by adding more cameras as needed, without the hassle of running additional cables.
However remember that adding more cameras may increase the bandwidth requirements. So it's important to ensure that the network devices such as routers, can handle the increased load.

Enhanced Weather Resistance:
Outdoor wireless cameras are designed to withstand various weather conditions. They are built with durable materials and rated for outdoor use, making them resistant to rain, snow, heat, and other environmental factors.
Outdoor security cameras with a high ingress protection rating (IP rating/sealing effectiveness) such as IP65 or higher are recommended for the best water & weather proof performance.

In terms of cost, wireless outdoor cameras are already cheaper than wired IP cameras. Also the absence of extensive wiring reduces the additional cost & maintenance expenses.

Some drawbacks of using wireless cameras

Some drawbacks of using wireless cameras & how to overcome them:

  1. While wireless security cameras offer numerous benefits, they also have some potential disadvantages to consider:Wireless cameras require Wi-Fi signals to transmit data. Physical barriers like walls, large objects, harsh weather conditions, or even other wireless devices can interfere the network & weaken the Wi-Fi signal, resulting in discontinuous connectivity or poor video quality. Hence it’s crucial to have a well-maintained Wi-Fi network to ensure consistent operation.
  2. Also the wireless cameras have a limited range to transmit data reliably. The range can vary depending on the device’s model, the Wi-Fi signal strength, and obstructions. If you have a large property or need to cover areas far from the Wi-Fi source, you should’ve Wi-Fi range extenders to ensure proper coverage.
  3. Without proper security measures wireless cameras connected to a network are prone to hacking or unauthorized access. It is essential to secure Wi-Fi networks with a strong password, encryption, and regular firmware updates to cope with these risks.
  4. Wireless cameras require a power source, either AC or DC. Battery-powered(DC) cameras need regular charging & checkup. While AC powered cameras require access to power outlets, limiting their flexibility in terms of placement.
  5. Also wireless cameras transmit data over the Wi-Fi network, consuming a significant amount of bandwidth. If running multiple cameras, it may impact the overall performance of the security network, especially if you have other devices using the network for bandwidth-intensive activities.

Factors to consider while buying a wireless security camera:

When buying a wireless security camera, there are several important factors to consider to ensure you make an informed decision. Here are some key factors to keep in mind:

Resolution: For clear and detailed video footage look for cameras with high-resolution capabilities, such as 1080p or higher.

Field of View: Consider the camera's field of view, which determines the area the camera can cover. A wider field of view can monitor more space, reducing the number of cameras needed for coverage.

Night Vision: If you require surveillance during nighttime or low-light conditions, choose a wireless camera with good night vision capabilities. Look for cameras with infrared (IR) LEDs that provide clear visibility in darkness.

Motion Detection and Alerts: Opt for a camera with reliable motion detection technology. Motion detection triggers alerts to notify you when activity is detected in the camera's field of view.

Two-Way Audio: Some wireless cameras come with built-in speakers and microphones, enabling two-way audio communication. This feature allows you to listen and speak through the camera, helps in monitoring as well as interacting with individuals i.e. doorbell Camera.

Mobile App and Remote Access: Check if the camera comes with a dedicated mobile app or software that allows for remote access. It enables you to view live video feeds, access recorded footage, and manage camera settings from your smartphone or tablet, regardless of your physical location.

Storage Options: Consider the available storage options for recorded video footage. Some cameras offer local storage options like SD cards, while others may provide cloud storage services. Evaluate the storage capacity and the convenience of accessing and managing the recorded footage.

Power Source: Determine whether you prefer battery-powered or outlet powered(AC) cameras. Battery-powered cameras offer flexibility in placement but require changing batteries or recharging. On the other hand, AC powered cameras require a power source/outlet nearby but provide static power without regular maintenance(recharging).

Budget: Set a budget for your wireless camera purchase. Prices can vary depending on features, image quality, and additional functionalities. Consider your specific requirements and make a balance between the features you need and your budget.
At last, research and read reviews from other users. Look for brands known for quality products, reliable customer support, and regular firmware updates for security and performance enhancements.

With easy installation, flexibility in placement, and the ability to expand and customize your surveillance system, wireless cameras are a more convenient & adaptable option than wired cameras.
The weather resistance property, lower prices & maintenance requirements, and integration with smart home systems makes them a versatile and future-proof investment.
